  1. A craftsman and his tools

There is always a lot of discussion on the web about the tools we use to perform our craft. Windows vs OSX, Photoshop vs Fireworks, WordPress vs ExpressionEngine etc. The truth is, the only thing that matters is that you are comfortable with your tools and know them well enough to do your best work.

  2. Responsive design test

With responsive design well on its way to becoming a standard, we need to develop quick and easy ways to test our designs and we develop them. Here is a really simple solution and one i’ll certainly be using.

  3. Reduce your WordPress website loading time

The time it takes your website to load is a big deal and you should do all you can to make sure it is optimized. If you’re using WordPress, Gareth Thompson has some great tips for you:

  4. My top 5 favourite blog designs right now

Whilst contemplating the ongoing redesign of this blog, I have looked at other blogs to see what they are doing and what appeals the most to me. Below is a list of my top 5 favourite blogs right now, in no particular order. Some of them may not be new but that isn’t the point.

  5. What ‘is’ coding?

This post is merely an explanation of a point I was trying to make on Twitter last night, but 140 characters just wasn’t enough.

  6. Spice up your FAQ page with jQuery

FAQ pages are fairly common place on websites these days, and quite rightly so, and there are some show/hide and accordion effects that are commonly used to display them. The thing is, I see many sites that use jQuery plug-ins to achieve this, even though the necessary code is relatively lightweight and simple. In short, a plug-in is overkill.

  7. Working with LESS

  8. 2011 in review

So, for me 2010 was an unpleasant year with one false start, two family bereavements and a horrible feeling of stagnation. Because of this, my wife and I were determined to make 2011 our year. Some of the above did spill into the beginning of the year, however it wasn’t long before things started to look up. Although a far more positive year, 2011 wasn’t without its ups and downs, but we made it through and feel all the better for it.

  9. 24 ways: There’s No Formula for Great Designs

Like many of you, I have been following the 24 ways articles throughout December, and as always, the standard has been both high and consistent. With only one day to go, one article in particular has really stood out to me and was published on the stroke of midnight:

Andy Clarke—There’s No Formula for Great Designs

What really stood out to me about this article is the fact that it addresses the only thing that bugs me about responsive web design—the fact that a fluid grid and a couple of media queries isn’t always enough.

  10. New new Twitter

So, there is a new new twitter, and a lot of people don’t seem to be too happy about it. Me, I actually quite like it. There are a few subtle improvements which to me, enhance the experience. Little things like giving someones actual name more emphasis than their twitter username, reminding us all that we are people, not just quirky nicknames.
