Evolving a design
Designing and developing a site from scratch, as I recently did with this one, is a massive undertaking. There’s certainly a lot more to think about than simply redesigning for the content. It’s something I don’t like to do too often.
The majority of websites undergo a massive overhaul every couple of years. That is something I really want to avoid here. What I want to do is slowly evolve the site over time, adding new content and configuring things as I go.
Of course if you take a screen grab of this site as it is now and one in five years they will undoubtedly look extremely different however any chances will have taken place gradually, as and when it becomes necessary to do so.
It is of course unusual for a designer to settle on his own site which is why I think evolving it over time is the best option rather than a complete redesign every few months. Imagine all of that re-branding and re-coding you would have to do.
I think the biggest transformation is when I inevitably change the site from XHTML to HTML 5 some time in the near future. It’s a change that most likely will not change the appearance of the site but keep it moving with the rest of the web. Of course CSS3 enhancements will no doubt also become more prominent as time moves on.
I’m finally satisfied with the way I have portrayed myself and my work on-line and plan to develop this further without disposing of all the work, time and effort that has gone into what you see before you.
